Sustainable fashion? Ca va de soi!

Molly models one of our ca va de soi caridgans in Navy

There’s a new name in luxury T’s at Mountain Air, and it’s the Montreal designed ça va de soi, which translates literally to “that goes on its own” suggests something that’s automatic or that goes without saying. ça va de soi specializes in simple concept, high quality T’s and sweaters, made from top-notch materials. This fall, Mountain Air has two designs and three colours of the ça va de soi button up and v-neck sweater made of super 160 merino wool, 15.5-micron Italian yarn. But what does that mean?

ça va de soi’s Italian yarn label primarily means that the yarn that goes into their products is “entirely processed, dyed and spun in Italy.” Not only does this provide an alternative to foreign, cheaply manufactured items, but it supports a threatened Italian industry that focuses producing an innovative, high-grade luxury product that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.[1] ça va de soi’s profile on LinkedIn makes its commitment to quality clear:

“The time we’ve taken to meet master spinners from

Italy — the best in the world — who give body,

elegance and colour to the raw materials. The time

to do things well and to pay attention to the imperceptible

details that transform clothing from simple

to unique, and that eliminates the boundaries

between seasons, eras and generations.[2]”

While the idea of slow fashion isn’t nearly as en vogue as the slow food revolution, it does get press from time to time, from growing popular discomfort with sweatshop labour and low quality throwaway fashion, and even Vivienne Westwood is telling people to buy fewer clothes but better quality. In the case of ça va de soi, the extra time put into selecting material for their fashions does result in higher quality garments.

The Super 160, the yarn that can be found in ça va de soi’s cardigans at Mountain Air, is merino wool fibre from Australia that has been spun by these Italian master weavers, renowned as some of the best in the world. You would have to be a pro to produce threads from fibres 15.5 microns in diameter (the industry standard is 20 microns, whereas a human hair is a massive 100 microns wide). This fibre is difficult to produce, and relies on a lot of things going right to produce it from the conditions under which the sheep live to the way it’s spun and dyed. The advantages of the Super 160 15.5 micron thread includes increased durability and pill resistance, and a higher degree of stretch naturally in the fibre itself.

Convert your fall wardrobe for fall

It’s officially fall here in the Rockies according to both the calendar date and the sound of the elk bugling in the park. As sad as we are to say goodbye to summer sunshine and beachy styles, autumn is a fashion favourite, but that doesn’t mean we have to stash all of our warm-weather outfits until next May (or a sunny vacation). Lots of your summer pieces can be perfect for fall–with a few modifications.

1. Tights. Summer skirts are fun and bright and the hardest thing to part with after the first frost, but that’s what tights were made for! Layer an opaque legging under a floral skirt to automatically winterize it, keeping you warm. While black is a classic, dark blues, purples, and reds are a great way to add subtle colour under a skirt. Hue offers classic quality and super-comfy fit. We also have a handful (or armful, rather) of Hue and Bleuforêt tights on half price! Stock up now before your knees turn blue!

image

We also have a selection of lovely microfibre tights from Happy Socks, which are designed in Sweden where they know a thing or two about cold climates, and made in Italy, where they know a thing or two about making lovely clothes. Try polkadot or argyle Happy Socks for happy legs!

image

For those whose legs need a little extra snuggly from their tights or who are thinking ahead to (dare we say it?) winter, we also now have Plush fleece lined tights. Nothing’s worse than having cold feet, and on that front, Boottights has you covered. Boottights offers “Actual socks attached to premium tights!” that combine your favourite sports sock with many different types of legging so you won’t have to worry about the sock you put on under your tights riding down in your boot and leaving you with chilly heel. We currently have 6 different designs of Boottight, from fishnet to victorian and kodiak inspired.

image

Fashionista tip: throw on some leggings or sheer hose under cute shorts for an inter-season look a la parisienne.

2. Boots. Nothing says autumn like gorgeous tall boots. Mountain Air currently has a smorgasbord of boots for both winter and fall, from classic equestrian to bright green floral. We have 10 different styles of Mjus alone for those in search of the classic knee-high boot. Check out this one. The Mjus Spadero Tall Boot, designed in Italy and made in Bosnia-Herzegovina, offers an elegant twist to your fall leather boot with glimmering bronze zipper detail at the back.

image

New Italmoda boots offer a funky alternative for those keen on hanging onto bright colours even after the begonias wither outside.Looking for something a little more practical? Timberland and Saute-Mouton have your back.

image

image

The new fall Timberland Savin Hill Boot comes in brown and black and has an anti-fatigue sole for those who need a fashionable work-boot.Saute-Mouton is one of our favourite brands here at Mountain Air. The Montreal brand not only makes their boots in Quebec, but lines them with the plushest wool you’ve ever felt (come in and feel them!). They also won’t make you sacrifice style for warmth. Have the best of both worlds with the Maria, Esmerelda, and Maude boots.

image

We also have beautiful boots from Hispanitas, Atrai, Bogs, Dkode, and Cushe, and always more coming in, so put your flip-flops and ballerina shoes into hibernation and come try some on

3. Layer up! This summer was all about loose-fitting sheer fabrics, which is great because all of those cocktails-on-the-veranda pieces can become cozy and work appropriate with the addition of a simple long-sleeved t-shirt underneath. I know what you’re thinking, “Layering was so 2000” but we’re not talking t-shirts under t-shirts. Mixing up the weight and lines of your tops will make for a sleeker look. Aim for similar colours to create cohesion, and pair with a skinny jean or tapered skirt.

image

4. Sweater up! After a certain point there is no amount of layering that will keep you warm, and it’s time to bust out the sweaters. You can get away with wearing your summer t-shirts well into the winter so long as you have a good sweater or hoodie to go over top. My favourite at the moment is steely blue knit sweater from Emu, which is pure merino wool with a bit of sparkle and great zipper detail on the back.

image

Don’t forget our Granted hand-knit wool sweaters (handmade in Canada) are 50% off! We also have sweaters and cardigans by Mystree, 525 America, Parkhurst, Press, ca va de soi, and more coming in all the time.
5. Scarves. Do we even need to say it? Scarves are a much loved accessory (the MOST loved accessory of this blogger). If you missed it, here’s a link to the video that was playing in our store all summer: 25 Ways to Tie a Scarf.

Now that you’re a scarf expert, you’ll want to embrace the Season of the Scarf. Summer wear can instantly become warm enough for the season with the help of a cozy scarf, and you might even be able to stave off (or fight off, if you’re unlucky) this season’s round of colds by keeping your neck warm. Of course, scarves aren’t just warm, they’re a lovely accessory for indoors, too, especially when paired with the slouchy boyfriend-sweaters that have been and continue to be en vogue this year.

Make the most of last season as you make the most of this one, may the first snow still be many weeks away, unless you’re a skier, in which case, hold tight because this morning’s dusting of snow on Mt. Colin promises winter is on its way.

Solutions for wedding wardrobe woes

Spring and summer is wedding season here in Jasper, and even if it’s not your big day, you still want to look your best for friends, family and photos. At Mountain Air, we’ve got solutions to all your last minute fashion emergencies, from basics to ballgowns.

Your Little Black Dress feels more like a Little “blah” Dress
Everyone knows you can’t upstage the bride at her own wedding, but that doesn’t mean you have to show up wearing a burlap sack. You probably brought your favourite formal outfit and remembered to pack sensible heels, but as the day draws nearer, you’re starting to feel like your wardrobe is lacking in pazzaz. Add a little colour with fun, summery nail polish from butter London. This great British brand comes in the colour of your heart’s desire, with cheeky names like “shag,” “scallywag,” and “blagger.” What’s even better, butter London is “3 Free,” which means it doesn’t contain formaldahyde, toluene, DBP colour, or carcinogens, making them kinder to both your nails and the environment. Try out these four: “slapper,” “jasper,” “trout pout,” and “shag.” ($17 a bottle)

image

If nail polish isnt really your thing, or if you’re looking to add a little glitz to your glamour, we carry a line of vivid bead jewelry handmade in Jasper; “Beads by Gosh.” These necklaces, bracelets, and earrings make the perfect accessories to add some colour to any outfit, and make a great souvenir you can take back home to commemorate the special day.

image

Nobody wants to wear the same shoes they wear to work to a special event, so ditch yout black pumps and sneak some colour into your look with vibrant summer heels from Desigual. These cloth wedges will inject a little whimsy into your ensemble and give you something to talk about when you’re sitting next to your sister’s husband’s mother’s co-worker from Toronto.

image

Overcome moody mountain weather. Mountain weather is rarely predictable, and if you’re attending an outdoor weather this summer in Jasper, you may be required to convert your clothes for rain or shine at the last minute. Beat the heat in a fashionable sun hat from Lillie Cohoe (handmadenin Nelson BC and 25% off at the moment). We also carry cardigans and blazers galore to help stave off the alpine chill should the sun proove hard to find.

image

Your date thinks plaid and jeans are formal. You’re set. You are dressed to the nines, but your dear date did not get the memo and needs a last minute lesson in wedding wear. Our men’s collection includes lots of solutions for the guy who arrives not quite prepared, from smart ties, dashing shirts, trousers, and dancing shoes for your forgetful Fred Astaire.

image

Your ballgown has no pockets. Credit card, cell phone, lipstick, hotel keys, tissues, the worn, folded piece of paper your scrawled your toast to the bride and groom onto. You’ve probably run out of room in your decollete to carry all the things you’re going to need, so treat yourself to a new clutch. From classic and simple to super bling, keep yourself organized and fresh all day and night without lugging your messenger bag around with you.
